Decorative Concrete That Has to Survive the Sun

Stamped concrete is ordinary structural concrete with a pattern pressed into the surface while it is still plastic. Done well, it looks like flagstone, slate, cobblestone, brick or wood plank, without the joints between pavers where weeds and ants move in. In Corona it is common on backyard patios, front walkways, entries and driveway borders, and it is a frequent upgrade when a 1980s or 1990s home gets a new backyard.

How stamped concrete is made

The base and forms are built the same way as any slab. Color goes in one of two ways: integral color mixed into the concrete at the plant, or a color hardener broadcast onto the surface after it is floated. A contrasting release agent is then applied, which keeps the stamps from sticking and leaves darker tones in the low spots for an antiqued look. Installers press rubber stamp mats into the surface in sequence, tamps them, and details edges by hand. Once cured, the release residue is washed off and the surface is sealed.

The working window is narrow. Press the mats while the concrete is too soft and the pattern sags; wait too long and the texture comes out faint and patchy. With July highs around 92 degrees in Corona, that window can close within minutes on an exposed slab, so we start stamped pours early in the morning, plan enough hands for the area, and split big patios into sections when it helps.

Patterns and colors

  • Ashlar slate and random stone: the most popular choices for patios and walkways.
  • Cobblestone and brick: often used for borders and driveway bands.
  • Wood plank: used around pools and on covered patios.
  • Seamless textures: stone texture without grout lines, for a quieter look.

With Corona's strong sun, we suggest lighter base colors on unshaded areas. Dark charcoals and deep browns look striking but get hot underfoot and show fading sooner.

Sealing is not optional

The sealer is what gives stamped concrete its color depth and protects it from stains, water and UV. In our climate a sealer breaks down faster in full sun than under a patio cover. Plan to reseal every few years. HomeGuide lists sealing at about $1 to $3 per square foot. For areas around pools or sprinklers, we add a slip-resistant additive to the sealer, because glossy sealed concrete can be slick when wet.

Stamped concrete versus pavers

Stamped concrete is one slab, so there is nothing to shift or sink one piece at a time and fewer gaps for weeds. Pavers can be lifted and reset if roots or utilities need access. Stamped concrete will crack at control joints like any slab, and we place those joints along pattern lines so they blend in.

Giving older stamped work a second life

Stamped concrete that has faded or whose sealer is peeling is often a candidate for a strip, clean, re-tint and reseal rather than removal. A plain slab that is still solid can take a stamped overlay instead of being torn out; HomeGuide puts stamped overlays at roughly $7 to $20 per square foot. We check the slab underneath first, since an overlay is only as durable as what it is bonded to.

Where We Use Stamped Concrete

Stamped finishes work anywhere a plain slab would, with a few adjustments for traffic and water.

Backyard patios

Full patios or a stamped field with a plain or contrasting border.

Front walkways and entries

Walks from the driveway to the door, often matched to a porch or landing.

Driveway borders and bands

Stamped strips along the edges or across the driveway to break up a large gray slab.

Pool surrounds

Light-colored patterns with a slip-resistant sealer around the water.

Reseal and recolor

Cleaning, color refresh and new sealer for faded or peeling stamped concrete.

Stamped overlays

A thin patterned layer over a sound existing slab when tear-out is not needed.

Stamped Concrete Questions

How much does stamped concrete cost?

HomeGuide's national ranges are about $9 to $30 per square foot for a stamped patio and $8 to $26 for a stamped driveway, depending on pattern and colors. We price your project after seeing the space.

How often does stamped concrete need sealing?

Plan on resealing every few years. Patios in full Corona sun lose sealer sooner than ones under a cover. Dull color, or water soaking in instead of beading up, tells you it is due.

Is stamped concrete slippery?

Sealed concrete can be slick when wet. Around pools, steps and sprinklers we add a slip-resistant additive to the sealer and use textured patterns.

Will stamped concrete crack?

Any concrete can crack. We place control joints along pattern lines so cracking happens where it is hard to see, and a good base and proper curing keep random cracking down.

Can you stamp my existing patio?

If the patio is sound, a stamped overlay can add pattern and color without removal. If it is badly cracked or sunken, replacement is the better route.
